The Green Lantern comics were mostly only "silly" in the Silver Age because of the poor writing associated with DC Comics during that era. Combined with the growing rift between Aquaman and Tempest, and Black Manta's new background as a victim of human trafficking, it changed the Sea King's reputation significantly. ![]() David cemented Aquaman's transformation by replacing his hand with a harpoon prosthetic. ![]() Before this shift, he was largely considered a goofy hero who was mostly associated with the Super Friends cartoon, but David's version completely changed this idea, at least for comic readers. His iconic run on Aquaman turned it into a sort of dark fantasy, making Arthur into the grumpy underwater equivalent of Conan the Barbarian. The Atlantean hero Aquaman undertook similar transformations, under Peter David's pen.
